Saturday 13th September - Lasswade High School
Despite an unpredictable forecast, the sun broke through for a perfect afternoon of hockey as Fidra Lions travelled to Eskvale.
The opening quarter saw both teams battling hard for possession. Eskvale struck first, capitalising on a counterattack to slot home an early goal and take a 1–0 lead. Fidra responded strongly in the second quarter. A quick break into the D forced a short corner, and after some neat stick work the Lions equalised. Momentum stayed with Fidra, and after a spell of scrappy play in front of goal they were awarded a penalty flick, which was calmly converted to put them 2–1 ahead at half time.
Heavy rain rolled in during the third quarter, making conditions tricky. However, Fidra adapted well, pressing high and winning another short corner. Persistent pressure eventually earned them a second penalty flick, extending the lead to 3–1. In the final quarter, both sides dug deep. Eskvale threatened on the break with balls pushed through the middle, but Fidra’s defence held firm. A looping run and clever aerial into the opposition D set up the Lions’ fourth and final goal, sealing a well-earned 4–1 victory.
A great team performance from Fidra in tough conditions — plenty to build on for the weeks ahead!
