On an absolutely gorgeous day with clear blue skies and thern=mometers sitting at 17 degrees Fidra began the 3019/20 league campaign against a strong Watsonians 4's.
The game started pretty much even but early on quick reactions from Watsonians Rich Booth saw a snap shot, with his back to goal, beating the unexpecting Matt in goal. Fidra's play became a bit scrappy and misplaced passes causing a lot of issues. Watsonians again capitalized on this by taking a quick foul on the edge of the D while some fidra players were still not paying attention and this saw Chris Robson deflect the pass passed the despairing dive of Matt to make it 0-2.
This seemed to bump Fidra out of their mindset and began to play some free flowing hockey as witnessed the week before. Not long after this some good teamwork resulted in Ben Ross opening Fidras account for the season to make it 1-2. This got Fidra fired up and play continued, pressuring Watsonians and forcing turnovers and duly scored the equalizer through league debutant Harry Sangster. Half Time finished 2-2.
The second half started with the temperature sitting at a lovely 20 degrees. Fidra picked up where they left off and it was pretty much even. Then for a brief 10 minute spell Fidra started to sit deeper and turning over the ball needlessly. This gave watsonians the chance to put pressure on and in this period had a slew of shots on goal ut a combination of saves from Matt in goal and good defensive teamwork kept them out. Fidra settled and started to control the game a bit more and when some thought a draw was on the cards up stepped Ben to net his second. An Excellent ball in from the right saw harry get to the ball before watsonians keeper. His touch rolled it to Ben who sat centre of an open goal and calmly pushed it in.
From here on out Watsonians started pushing hard for an equalizer and unfortunately this saw green cards given to Nick and Dougie. This didnt upset the flow to much and Fidra held out to claim and opening day victory 3-2.
