On an overcast yet mild afternoon the 2nds travelled into Edinburgh to face off against Edinburgh Uni at Peffermill Playing Fields. Edinburgh Uni were coming into the game off of a defeat to Dunfermline Carnegie whilst Fidra looked to extend their winning streak to 2.
Due to some confusion Fidra started the game with only 10 men on the pitch and the Uni took full advantage of this and had the ball in the Fidra goal within 60 seconds of the game starting. Not exactly the start Fidra were looking for!!
However, in what turned out to be a crazy first period, Fidra responded instantly and within 150 seconds both teams were level as Martin coolly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the empty goal. Not letting up on the pressure Fidra were constantly on the attack, looking more and more comfortable on the ball and just after the 4-minute mark Ben Ross converted to Give Fidra the lead.
Things quietened down from there and the match become open, end to end hockey as both teams looked to add another. To complete the stunning Fidra comeback Gary Wright directed home Fidra's 3rd on the 14-minute mark and giving them a comfortable lead.
The game returned to the open, flowing end to end state as both team s moved the ball around looking for that elusive chink in each other's defence and get an attempt on goal. It stayed this way all through the 2nd period and into halftime.
With the 2nd half starting few could predict that cards were on the menu, but they were, with Uni winning that battle 3-1. With scoring chances few and far between and both teams failing to convert the chances they did get the game became slightly heated and niggly. It felt that Uni, every opportunity they could, would appeal for fouls not even giving the umpires time to blow their whistler or play advantage. In the end, over the 2 periods Uni saw their captain given a green card and a yellow with another player receiving a green whilst Rohan Wright received a green and Fidra's only card.
There was a period where Fidra became a bit shaky and were hitting the ball to all parts as Uni applied pressure. Eventually experience won out as they settled down and saw out the remainder of the game with little worry. Full time arrived and Fidra extend their winning streak to 2 with a 3-1 victory.
Next week the 2's don't have a game whilst the 1's are at home to Dunfermline Carnegie 3's with a 14:15 start. your support would be appreciated. Thank you to Nathan Forrest for umpiring our game and thank you to Edinburgh Uni for a game played in good spirit, good luck for the rest of the season.
